Residential Service and Sales Technician

About The Role:

A residential HVAC service repair technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems in private homes. This role requires a blend of technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and excellent customer service.

What You'll Do:

  • Diagnosis and Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve mechanical and electrical faults in existing HVAC systems using diagnostic tools and equipment.
  • Repairs and Installations: Repair or replace defective components (e.g., compressors, motors, thermostats) and install new systems following blueprints, manufacturer recommendations, and local codes.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Conduct routine maintenance, including cleaning units, checking refrigerant levels, inspecting ductwork, and replacing filters to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
  • Customer Interaction: Communicate effectively with homeowners to explain system issues, recommend solutions or upgrades, and provide guidance on system operation and maintenance.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of all work performed, parts used, and customer interactions using work orders, invoices, and company software/tablets.
  • Safety and Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols and environmental regulations, especially those regarding the handling and disposal of refrigerants (EPA 608 certification) and the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) guidelines.
  • Vehicle and Inventory Management: Maintain a clean, organized, and well-inventoried company vehicle, ensuring necessary parts and tools are on hand for job sites.
  • On-Call/Emergency Service: Be available for emergency service calls during evenings, weekends, and holidays as part of a rotation schedule.

Requirements:

  • Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Licenses & Certifications: A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is essential.
    U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Section 608 Certification for handling
    refrigerants is mandatory.
  • Experience: A minimum of 1-3 years of hands-on experience in HVAC service is typically
    preferred, though some companies offer apprenticeships or on-the-job training for entry-
    level candidates.
  • Technical Skills: Strong mechanical aptitude, electrical troubleshooting abilities, and
    familiarity with schematics and blueprints are necessary.
  • Physical Stamina: The role is physically demanding, requiring the ability to lift heavy
    equipment (up to 50-70 lbs), climb ladders, and work in confined spaces (attics, crawl
    spaces) or varying weather conditions

 

Preferred

  • Technical Training: A certificate or associate's degree from a technical or trade school is preferred.
  • Additional Certifications: Certifications from organizations like
    • NATE (North American Technician Excellence)
    • System Design Certifications NCI (National Comfort Institute)
    • Combustion Certification NCI (National Comfort Institute)
  • Soft Skills: Strong problem-solving, time management, and communication skills (verbal
    and written) are crucial for customer satisfaction and teamwork.
